The Fourth Grade Film Festival was a huge success! I want to extend a big thank you all the parents, kids and teachers who came out to support the students! And a gigantic thank you to Ms. Hebert who was our amazing tech guru along each step of this project. If you were not able to make it out to the fest check out our videos in the links below! Enjoy! 4th graders are finally ready to unveil their short films!! They have worked so hard on this project and I couldn't be more proud of them! We are having a film festival in the Wells Branch gym on Wednesday May 14th at 5:30. Join us in celebrating the next generation of film makers, artists and animators we have here at WBE! Be sure to watch the preview below to see some oif the highlights! All of the videos will be posted here soon, so keep an eye out! My 4th grade classes are collaborating to make some pretty amazing short films. Here is a small sample of their character and set designs so far. We are working in teams to make a clay creature and a detailed world for them to live in. After spring break we will begin animating and editing our movies. Once they are finished I will post them on the blog for everyone to enjoy! For now, you can watch my sample animation to get an idea of what is to come. The 3rd graders have been experimenting with ways to use technology to make art. This month we have been using google draw to create text people. We use word art to be able to change the size, font and positions of our text and then put it all together to form a figure. Take a look at our work!
This year 5th graders were challenged to make a soundsuit in the style of the contemporary artist Nick Cave. Nice Cave uses fabris, found objects, feathers, sequins and all sorts of other unexpected materials to make his creatures come to life. Click here for more info on his creations!
We made our soundsuits out of clay at first, making sure to sculpt our person in motion. Then we selected a color scheme and began to paint. Students chose from a variety of materials like felt, feathers, beads, glitter, wire, ribbons, plastic plants and branches and even fake fur. We used hot glue to stick our supplies together and the results are truly fantasic! Browse through our display photos here, or stop by the art hallway to get a closer look at these sculptures as they frolic, jump and levitate! The fabulous mosaic's from last year's 5th graders are finally finished and on display in the hallway by the gym! It has been a long process. The tiles were all glazed by students from Ms. Steffen's class last year, but had to be fired, and then reglazed with a clear protective coat and then fired again. After all that I had to build frames to hold the murals and then apply tile glue while making sure everything was evenly spaced. Finally I rubbed grout (kind of like cement) into the cracks between the tiles and polished it all off with a big thick sponge.
The result of all this hard work is truly spectacular! The mosaics were hung last week and students and parents are still marveling at them in the hallway. If you're at the school make sure you stop by the gym to see Ben Franklin and Rosa Parks in all their glory! Girls art club is a great way for young girls to make friends, tap into their creative side and develop leadership skills. The club is 100% student led, so the girls are in charge of deciding what we will make, the teacher is the facilitator. There is room for only 15 girls, so get thiose permission slips and the $10.00 fee in ASAP! Our first meeting will be next Tuesday October the 8th from 2:50-4:00. Hope to see you there! As we prepare to start our first projects I know some of you are anxious about what to expect this year. I have created a Back to School Letter that should give you a bit of background about me and what subjects each grade will cover. Please click on the link to see all the fun in store for us!! Welcome back, artists! Phew, I have had a busy summer of traveling and art making! I built furniture with my dad in Kansas, learned how to do stop motion animation, did some sewing, built a chicken coop and made paper mache masks!! I've had a chance to rest and recharge my art batteries and I hope you have too! There are so many cool projects we are going to do this year! I can't wait to give you all big hugs and get started creating! Keep on drawing, and I'll see you in a few weeks
