We started this project by working as a group to chose our subject and our colors. Then we enlarged each 1/2 inch square on the photo into a 6 inch square on paper, we had to collaborate a lot to make sure all the squares fit together right. Once we finished our drawing we transfered each paper square onto tile and used ceramic glaze to paint each tile. We are not done yet, but its starting to come together to form an amazing mural!
The 5th graders at Wells Branch have been working on a collaborative project to make murals of 2 of their personal heroes: Rosa Parks and Benjamin Franklin. We have been studying scale, and proportion and practicing taking a small photograph and enlarging it by graphing one square at a time. We have been studying the art of Chuck Close because he paints giant portraits that all begin from a tiny photo. We started this project by working as a group to chose our subject and our colors. The 5th graders of Wells Branch were recently featured on the WBE Tech blog. Follow the link to learn more about their project! http://wellsbranchtech.edublogs.org/
Kinders at Voigt and Wells Branch get the opportunity to explore the first artwork ever found! We have been learning about the Cave of the Bulls in Lascaux, France. Some of the paintings in the cave were made in 30,000 BCE! At Voigt the kinders got to really see what it was like for the cavemen by crawling inside our class cave. Both classes used watercolor, chalk and tempera paint with sticks to make their art. Check out our beautiful cave paintings!
Last Friday the 5th graders got a special visit from one of Austin's amazing abstract artists, Gabe Langholtz! Gabe is the father of one of our own 5th grade artists, Sadie Langholtz, and was nice enough to come in and speak to the students about what he does. The kids got to see a variety of Gabe's work ranging from realistic to abstract pieces all painted on canvas. Gabe told the young artists all about discovering his passion for art, where he gets his ideas, and what the experience of making, exhibiting and selling art is really like. It was a very inspiring day for the 5th students and they are still talking about it! You can find out more about the work of Gabe Langholtz here: http://www.gabelangholtz.com/ This week the 2nd graders at Voigt are working hard to finish their wire fish inspired by the artist and toy maker, Alexander Calder. We started this project by researching different kinds of fish and we practiced drawing them before starting on our wire. Once we had our sketch we were ready to begin our wire constructions. The students chose a pair of complimentary colors to work with and then built their frame and supports After constructing a sturdy fish they were ready to add their beads or found objects to their design. Students added many different objects to their fish including beads, bottlecaps, pipecleaners and seeds. The result is a lovely wire fish made by some of the most creative minds here at Voigt!
Today the third graders got to have some good clean fun in the art room! Last week we studied the Book of Kells from Ireland. This week we are working to create our own illuminated page using some odd art supplies. To make our colorful swirled backgrounds we used shaving cream, food coloring and baking trays. Here is what we did: First the kids squirted some of the shaving cream into the baking trays and smoothed it all out. Then the students dropped food coloring onto the shaving cream and swirled it aound with wooden sticks. Next the kids placed their papers on top of the rainbow cream, pressed down slightly and then peeled back the paper to reveal a lovely swirled design. The results was a truly unique and beautiful background for our artwork. |
